Matthew Hughes is an award-winning Canadian author of SF, fantasy and crime fiction, with a magnum opus called What the Wind Brings. It's a historical/magical realism novel based on true events that began when shipwrecked African slaves combined with indigenous peoples in the forests of mid-1500s coastal Ecuador, and successfully resisted the efforts of Spanish conquistadors to subdue them. The book just won the Endeavour Award.
